We are delighted to announce that our project, “Montessori-Inspired NFC Interactive Toy Hardware and AR-Enhanced Mobile Application for Children Aged 2–6”, has been awarded support under the TÜBİTAK 1507 SME R&D Startup Support Program.

Project Overview

We are combining physical toys with augmented reality (AR) digital content specially designed for early childhood. Our goal is to support children’s sensory, cognitive, and motor skills through safe, age-appropriate, and engaging play experiences.

Core components:

  • NFC interactive toy hardware: When children interact with a tangible object (toy/figure/card), the system recognises it through NFC.
  • AR-enhanced mobile application: Based on the recognised object, AR scenes, mini-tasks, and discovery moments unfold.
  • Aligned with Montessori principles: Tangible materials, repeatable micro-tasks, child-paced progress, and distraction-free interfaces.

Why Montessori?

The Montessori approach emphasises self-directed exploration, sensory-based learning, and movement-driven interaction. In our project:

  • Physical → Digital bridge: Tangible objects transform into meaningful digital interactions.
  • Child-paced progress: Content unlocks gradually, tailored to each child’s tempo.
  • Safe and focused design: Clean interfaces and balanced screen time ensure an age-appropriate experience.

How It Works

  1. Touch (NFC): The child taps a toy/tag/card on the device.
  2. Recognise (Mobile App): The system reads the NFC ID and loads the corresponding content.
  3. Explore (AR): The camera view is enriched with AR scenes—colours, shapes, counting, matching, and more.

Privacy & safety: Local data processing, age-appropriate content filters, and parental settings are planned.

Collaboration Roles

  • Kubulab: AR content design, mobile app development, game/interaction mechanics, and user experience research.
  • HEFA: Electronic hardware design, NFC integration, embedded software, and prototyping.

Expected Contributions

  • Sensory & motor development: Object recognition, matching, and fine motor practice.
  • Cognitive support: Sequencing, categorisation, association, and basic problem-solving.
  • Parent/teacher bridge: Optional progress tracking and guidance features (to be validated in pilot phases).

We would like to thank all our team members and partners for contributing to this exciting journey. We will continue to share updates on the project through our blog. If you are interested in pilot collaborations, please feel free to reach out.
